Where we board horses

Barn choice is a drive-time decision more than anything else. The best facility in the state is worth nothing if you dread the trip and stop going. That is why every area page below talks about the actual roads — GA-316, I-85, I-985, GA-400, Highway 20 — and what they look like at six in the evening rather than on a quiet Sunday.

We cover three counties on the northeast side of metro Atlanta. If you are just outside them and willing to make the drive, call anyway; we would rather have the conversation than turn you away on a map line.

How to judge a barn once you get there

Wherever you end up boarding, the tour tells you most of what you need to know if you look at the right things. Start with water: is it clean, is there enough of it, and is there a plan for the handful of nights a year when lines freeze here. Then look at fencing — no wire ends, no cracked boards at horse-chest height, gates that latch on the first try.

Then look at the horses. Weight, coat, feet, and demeanor tell you more than the barn aisle does. A tidy aisle with thin horses in the back field is a barn to walk away from; a plain barn with round, calm, well-trimmed horses is one to take seriously.

Finally, ask the operational questions: who feeds on Sunday, who calls the vet at midnight, how turnout groups are decided, and what happens to the low horse in the herd at the round bale. Ask us those too — we would rather answer them than have you find out later.
